Reg found himself suddenly surrounded in his haven. Dozens of armed men were clearly looking for him. Since fighting was out of the question he tried to squeeze past them without them noticing, but it was not to be and Reg was shot and staked.

With dawn not too distant, Gideon gave up the hunt and returned to the city via a Citroen stolen from a farm. Gideon crashed somewhere and waited for the sun to set again.

November 2, 1992

But shortly before the sun set, Thomas' body half on its side, rollle slightly and pushed the stake a little out of his heart. Slowly he mustered his will to remove the stake, and slowly he succeeded and went about the task of unstaking the others, including Reg. They were in a low, damp cave scattered with bodies. Vitally, although unstaked, did not wake. They searched the bodies, one of them had a pocket watch monogrammed "UT", and symbol of the office of Justicar. Could this be the Justicar that was sent to take over the investigation of the masquerade breaches?

Finally they gathered their courage and as the sun set they made there way out of the cave. To be confronted by yet another pack of Lupines, those that had attacked them last night were but corpses in the grass. The apparent leader stepped forward and quizzed them. Once it became clear they were hapless, they were sent back to Milwaukee city with the threat that if if the Leeches couldn't clear up their own mess - the Lupines would force the issue.

Then they headed back to the Prince's haven and met up with Gideon. They spoke briefly and decided to speak with the Prince, and maybe then try and find the Anubis...

They were shown into a reception room, in which all the fittings and furniture had been removed or covered. The gathering of gunmen had been cloaked. But soon almost a dozen men with automatic guns at short range began to fire at them - once again they had been ambushed! And this time in the Prince's haven!

They desperately fought, some gunmen did die. Thomas fell under gunfire - the others to a monstrous gollumn like creature clearly using obfuscatory powers to inject them with an unknown agent that slowly overwhelmed their senses.

They awoke in a small dark cell. Injured, and short on blood they hatched an escape plan. Since Thomas chained to the wall with unbreakable chains - they would rip of his arms and legs. And so Vitally, Gideon and Reg descended on Thomas and began to tear chunks of flesh and skin from him - gnawing through the limbs causing Thomas unbearable agony. Finally, unable to support the weight of his body, the arms tore free and the Quadraplegic spasmo-cannibal splotted agonisingly into a pool of his own vitae and flesh.

Before waking up, staked and lying on the ground along with the others in the same cell. The door was opened and a necromantic green fire in a stone brazier could be seen in the next room. Above it, dangled the body of a woman - her hair beginning to shrivel and her dessicated skin scorching. Beyond the macarbre sight was the hunched figure of Prince Merik who began to recuont the names of those he had killed each time finishing with "I can never forget." Four hundred and twenty two was his total. Finally he confessed to killing his wife, predicted he would be destroyed for it and opined "Oh - I hope they don't forget." as they fell back into a slumber.

And awoke in a cage, different this time. The smell of popcorn in the air. They briefly explored their new surroundings - the cage was covered in a thick sheet and it was difficult to ascertain the time of day. A crowd was nearby. Eventually the sheet was removed and they found they were at a circus, and it was the middle of the night. An extravagant Carnie wearing a ringmaster's outfit described the vicious monsters in the cage and a puppy was presented to the prisoner's. Gideon extradicted the doomed canine immediately. The crowd dispersed as the coterie began smashing their way out of the cage floor. Once free they made teir way into the mass of tents and amusements, coming to an unusual sight. Two tents, one labelled with their base or immediate desires - another with a sign that read "The Truth". Blocking their way was a sandwich board which contained the single word, "OR".

You want the Truth?

They chose the Truth, over slaying Annabelle, acquiring weapons and slaking their thirst. The tent was empty but for one corner that was a studio set of an opulent study. Behind the desk sat a Mediterranean man in simple clothes. He introduced himself as 'Paulos', a Brujah; the Bloodless Animal Man first referenced in Session VI and it was his body they rescued from the Hunter's grasp in Session VIII and it was his power of Dominate that caused them to lose a portion of their memory and to find themselves at the doorstep of Lodin's kidnapper - Roarke, who had subsisted off Paulos torpid blood and whose actions had gotten them tangled in local Kindred politics in the first place. And yea - if Anthonio were present he might have also mentioned that it was his blood that Anthonio consumed to give him the stunning powers of Auspex that were vital in rescuing Lodin before he was devoured by rats.

Paulos went on - he was still in torpor, at the place they buried him which he was not going to tell them. They had been injected by a powerful supernatural psychotropic developed by Saul Osiecki, a hunter with strange powers they met at the Succubus Club in Session XIV. It was meant to merely allow Paulos to communicate directly with users while he was still torpored, but Saul weaponized it.

But, said Paulos, the coterie was exposed and he had time to talk. So talk he continued to do. He was being hunted by a Toreador who he named "Maria". He had thought had escaped her in the New World - but she was not contented and followed him here. He asked that when the time came, they would side with him, since she was the aggressor. He confessed to manipulating them, along with members of the Primogen, including Annabelle who he named as one of his pawns that Maria thought was one of her pawns.

Paulos believed it was she that was responsible for the attack on the Nosferatu, and that she was using a particularly evil group of Werewolves called Black Spiral Dancers to do her deed. Khalid had hidden himself from Paulos, and presumably Maria was ignorant of him for some time too. Paulos hypothosized that she found out about the paranoid Nosferatu and sought his destruction out of fear that he was one of Paulos' tools. He also very definitely did say that if you want to find the BSDs that were responsible, look for a place and time like the one they were in.

He advised them the time for choices was close, that Maria's actions against the Nosferatu were just the first move of her end game - so overt were they compared with the years past. He was trying to awaken, but feared the consequences to those that were unfortunate enough to be nearby when he did. But if he didn't she would find him and destroy him. He didn't know much about Milwaukee and the situation there, other than that which he could extract from their minds. He deduced the Prince had gone quite mad and they were certainly in peril of Final Death. He wished them well, and they faded to black.

They awoke in the cell. Unstaked and unchained. The door opened and six mortals roughly shoved into the cell. A sequence of frenzies began - Thomas notable amongst them began to maul into a teenage boy. The room was filled with screams, sobbing, crying, anguished gargles and the shouts of frenzying Kindred and their coterie mates trying to stop them. They soon fell asleep.

They awoke in darkness in a closed space lying down. They found themselves 'sliding' backwards into a stark white light. A loved one and a doctor looked over them, but they were paralysed and could not speak out. Their loved ones confirmed their identity and they were slid away again accompanied by the sobs of those they had left behind. The scene shifted, they were on a hill side covered in graves. Before they had much chance to converse, the bodies burst forth from their graves. Each stone had a name of a victim of one coterie member or another. Most of them stood still and allowed the scene to play its course - but Thomas ran like hell pursued him at his heels. Through glen and forest he ran. Pursued endlessly by the mauled dead he had sent screaming to the grave. Finally he was caught like a fox in a spotlight - a pack of werewolves had him dead to rights.

But then he awoke. Again in the cell - they all came around. An elderly man opened the cell door and began to wheel in various medical instruments on a trolley. They bowled him over, and Thomas slit his throat with a scalpel. They charged up the stairs, took care of the guard at the door to the cellar and then began a firefight with the rest of them. Gideon began to slake his thirst, Thomas began to open fire and Vitally threw furniture and took cover before dealing with the rearguard. Reg snuck out back and returned to smash through the front door with a brick/pedal Macguyvered car. Once the threats had been dealt with they looked to one another and tried to figure out...where next? But they were cut off from further thought by a loud explosion outside...
Serafina was born on the 22nd of November 1163 to an upper class family on the island of Malta. She grew up in luxury, although her parents left her and her two elder brothers to be raised mostly by nannies. From an young age her brothers would often tease Serafina, but it wasn't long before she was managing to get the better of them, and they soon stopped, or at least it greatly reduced in frequency as they always came out worst. Occasionally Serafina's parents would hold, or go out to, a dinner party, during which she had to stay out of the way. Eventually Serafina was old enough to be taken along and left in the childrens room with the children of many of the other nobles that were present. During that night Serafina noticed that there were two distinct groups formed in the room, the smaller group was formed from the children of the Arabs that had remained on Malta after the County of Sicily took the island from them. Some of the other children would sneer at the Arabs and mutter things about them under their breath but most just ignored their presence as they seemed a very insular group. It didn't take long before Serafina couldn't continue to ignore the Arab children and went to talk to them. Before long they were laughing and joking and soon afterwards the two groups came together. There were some of the children that weren't fond of the new state of affairs but everyone else was getting along so well nothing came of it. Over the following years Serafina found that she spent a lot of time associating with the Arab children, in the process learning their language and developing a knowledge of their religious texts.

When she became more mature Serafina was taken to learn proficiency with certain arms. Initially she was taken to learn archery, but this didn't lead to anything as Serafina didn't have sufficient strength to pull a bow properly. Afterwards she was taken to learn use of the sword, but again she was too weak to be able to wield it properly. This left two options for martial training; firstly she could learn to use a dagger, secondly she could learn to fight unarmed. With a great deal of effort Serafina convinced her father that it would be better for her to study unarmed combat as that way she would never be reliant upon having a dagger to hand to be capable of defending herself. The European styles of combat that were present were not particularly appropriate as they were largely reliant upon the fighters strength, so the father of one of Serafina's Arab friends was able to arrange for her to learn an Arabic style of combat. In time Serafina became quite proficient in it.

At the age of 14 Serafina was taken to meet her future husband as her parents had arranged a marriage with a 16 year old noble, called Roger, that was from a part of what had formerly been the Duchy of Apulia and Calabria a few decades earlier but was now a part of the Kingdom of Sicily. The pair instantly liked each other and frequently wrote to each other during the period prior to their marriage the following year. After marriage, the pair lived on a small holding in Apulia as Roger didn't stand to inherit much, the marriage had been an entirely political arrangement for the benefit of his and Serafina's elder siblings, so when Roger was offered a significantly larger piece of land and an associated title that his brother didn't want in the Holy Land it was gladly accepted. Whilst preparing for the trip Serafina studied French, and helped Roger learn Arabic so by the time they set out a couple of months later they were each capable of holding a conversation with anyone in the region.

Upon arriving in the Holy Land, Serafina and Roger found that their land was located in Oultrejordain, far South of Jerusalem, bordering Muslim territory. Upon arriving in their barony they discovered that it was in a terrible state of affairs, requiring a great deal of effort to get everything properly organised. Roger did a fantastic job of getting the finances in order and dealing with the Europeans on the land whilst Serafina dealt with the Arabs. After a couple of years it was running far smoother than any other holding in Oultrejordain, and was more prosperous than many of the larger Baronies. During this period of prosperity Serafina became pregnant twice, although the first pregnancy ended with a miscarriage. The second pregnancy resulted in the birth of a son on the 23rd of December 1184, he was called Tancred.

Late one midsummer night in 1185 Serafina recieved word informing her that there had been a skirmish with bandits and during the fighting Roger had taken a fatal blow to the head. Serafina was distraught as, although the marriage had been arranged for political gain, she deeply loved Roger. She did not, however, spend too much time grieving as she knew that doing so for would cause problems in the barony, and so chose to honour Roger's memory by seeing that his land and his people continued to prosper. This came to an end only months later when the land was lost in a border skirmish. Without Roger, Serafina was unable to sufficiently defend her territory, and it's prosperity made it an appealing target. Serafina managed to escape with Tancred, taking a reasonable amount of valuables also, to Segor, before soon moving on to Jerusalem.

During her time in Jerusalem, Serafina met a man called Tomasso De Brexianno and gradually fell in love with him. She wasn't fond of one of his friends, a strange man that reminded Serafina of someone that seemed to have been following her in Malta before she was married, but didn't think it could possibly be the same person, given that about a decade had passed and the man that had been following her would've looked much older now. Thankfully he was only around very infrequently and never stayed very long. After almost two years, Jerusalem fell to the forces of Salah ad Din. Serafina donated all her money to help pay the ransom for those that couldn't afford it and was left with little more than food and clothing. Following the surrender Serafina heard nothing from Tomasso and assumed that he had been killed during the fighting. During the subsequent journey to Tyre, Tancred fell ill and passed away.

When Serafina arrived at Tyre she turned to the Church for support spiritually, and in return assisted caring for the temples. As time passed Serafina came to realise that the Catholic faith no longer represented her beliefs and found a Coptic priest to convert. Soon afterwards Serafina heard some news that was the best she had had for a while, Tomasso had been seen with Guy's forces heading to Acre, and so set out to look for him. When she caught up with them Serafina begin trying to find Tomasso but couldn't find him, by the time she realised he wasn't there it was too late, Salah ad-Din had them surrounded. The following two years were not pleasant as the conditions were terrible, with disease rampant. Eventually reinforcements came and Serafina spotted Tomasso on one of the ships that had brought them. With some effort she managed to get onto the ship and spent the whole night talking to Tomasso, who went to bed a short time before the sunrise. Just before he did retire he suggested that Serafina stayed up long enough to watch the sunrise, she got the impression that it was important to him, that it was something to be remembered so she did although didn't realise the significance until the following night.

The following day Serafina arose very late with the sun low in the sky, giving the sky a beautiful red hue, as if a counterpoint to the sunrise that she had witnessed earlier. When Tomasso arose they started talking again and he asked about the sunrise that morning, which Serafina described in detail, before moved on to describing the sunset that had followed. Tomasso sat listening, clearly taking in every detail, appearing almost refreshed by it. Afterwards he said that he had something to ask Serafina. As she had thought that he was leading up to a marriage proposal Serafina was shocked by what Tomasso actually asked. After offering her the embrace, Tomasso went on to inform Serafina that it was a tradition of his clan that potential childe be offered the embrace rather than have it forced upon them, and that she would have that night to decide. He went on to tell her that it was also a tradition of his clan to test potential childe prior to the embrace, adding that he had been watching her since before she was married and that he had arranged the death of Roger. Upon hearing this Serafina ran to the cabin she had been allocated and locked herself in. Several hours passed before she emerged, and sent a message for Tomasso, requesting that he joined her. When he arrived Serafina told him her answer; yes.

During the following month the mortal Europeans were preparing to end the siege of Acre and Serafina, aboard ship, was learning what she needed to know for her new existence. Once the siege was over some of the Europeans returned to their own lands, Tomasso and Serafina went some of the way with them, to the Kingdom of Sicily. The purpose of this journey was twofold, Serafina was being taken to be presented to the elders of Clan Lasombra and, following Tomasso's advice she was taking a new identity. After a stop in Malta Serafina was no more, she was now Demiana, a Maltese Coptic Christian of Arabic descent. In Sicily Demiana learnt a great deal, but eventually she returned to the Holy Lands alongside Tomasso.

Although she loved Tomasso, Demiana joined a group of neonates in Outremer in order to avoid being totally dependant upon him.

Demiana appears to be in her mid twenties 5' 2" tall with a very slim build, raven hair, olive skin and brown eyes. Her style of dress is like a less extravagant version of Sibylla from Kingdom of Heaven (see picture), only with a more layered effect and more flared sleeves, creating plenty of shadows within the clothing and making her build not appear quite as slim as it really is.
Bitter Crusade X
Dying Embers I

The Itinerant Company passed through the ruined gates and scorched walls of Zara, all the while making their way through refugees leaving the city, and the bereaved wandering aimlessly through the raped city.
A very different place to the beautiful Hungarian trading city that they had seen upon their initial arrival . After some debate they made for the large tavern beneath which Prince Gari was lairing, but after making their way there, found only a scorched pile of ruble where the opulent taverna used to stand. Volund and others sought in vain through the wreckage for any sign of Gari, his secret chambers beneath the building, or the precious metals he owed them. After coming to the conclusion that they would never again accept a hire from a childe of Malkav without some kind of down-payment, they decided to search the harbour and docks for a ship that may take them after the Crusade, or for anyone that may relate to them exactly what had happened to Zara while they were away.
At the harbour they found the bay deserted, no longer were their twenty thousand Crusaders moored off-shore, and only a scant few merchant vessels stood at anchor in the dark waters of Dalmatia.
As they stood talking a robed figure who had been standing by the docks suddenly took notice of Mortius, and seeing that he was noticed himself, moved to approach. Brother Anthony walked toward him, and was greeted by the young monk who introduced himself as Brother Euginious, a messenger from Narses and monk of the abey of St Pentelaimon. He greeted Mortius with a humble demeanour and told him that he had been waiting by the docks of Zara for more than two weeks to give him a letter from the Archbishop of Nod, upon finishing he produced a scroll from the folds of his grey robe, housed in a leather tube and sealed with the symbol of Narses in red wax.
The letter told Mortius, and thus the Company, whom to make contact with in the event the Crusade sailed for either Jerusalem of Constantinople.
In the event of Jerusalem it was a Bishop Federa, and in the event that the Crusade should sail for Constantinople, it was a Cainite named Bishop Alfonso, to be found in the Venetian quater.
Stowing the letter in his own cloak, Mortius led Eugenius back to the Company, and from there they proceeded to the tavern where Eugenius had lodgings.
Round a table in the inn they learned that some months after they had departed Zara for Toth the Crusaders had turned upon an increasingly hostile populace, burning the city, looting it's wealth for their debts to the Venetian navy, and then leaving it in it's wake as they set sail for New Rome.
For it would seem that some time ago the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II was deposed, blinded, and imprisoned by his own brother, the new Emperor Alexius III. The son of the now deceased Isaac, also called Alexius, had come to the mortal leaders of the Fourth Crusade, ofering to use Byzantine wealth to pay their debts and Byzantine soldiers to aid their assault of Jerusalem, if they would but put him upon his rightful throne.
At last, and with no where else to turn, the noble leaders of the Crusade had agreed, and even now sailed east.
After informing Eugenius of their reasons for leaving Zara so that he might pass word to Prince Narses, they debated the course they might take to Byzanium, to catch up with the fleet. On the one hand was the longer but perhaps swifter route by sea, on the other hand the shorter yet more cragnannyfied land route, across the Balkans. The latter was chosen by merit of it's increased cragnannyfication factor.
And so, leaving Zara behind, and much to Dragovich's dismay, they embarked upon yet another lengthy journey to the east, sailing down the mighty Danube and passing through many great city's along their route.
In April of 1204, the boat they had hired to take them on the last leg of the journey reached the huge battlements of The Queen of Citys, and found the numerous armed ships of the Crusaders moored outside it's walls in the Bosphorous. Sailing through they came to one of the half empty harbours and disembarked.
Passing though the greatest battlements in Europe they entered the metropolis of Constantinople, with all it's high walls, golden domes, slender towers, pillared villas, wide thoroughfares, and eastern flavour.
After almost a century of wandering Baradeus was home at last.
Wandering the streets of that most cosmopolitan of cities, they were all struck by it's beauty and uniqueness, The Dream that is Constantinople.
They decided it best that they make contact with Bishop Alfonso in the Venetian Quater as soon as possible, and so they set off, Mortius looking at the striking skyline of the city thinking that it perhaps reminded of one he had seen before, if only in dreams.
They reached the walled suburb of the Venetian Quiater, where the guardsmen, noting that they were not natives of the city, let them pass, all save Baradeus who was dressed in the old attire of the Byzantine infantry. Looking at Baradeus suspiciously he told him to surrender his weapons before entering, and just as soon forgot when Baradeus applied his arts of Dominate to his weak mind.
They soon found the centre of the Quater, and thus the most likely place for Bishop Alfonso. It was a large governor's house of wood and stone with guardsmen in Venetian livery at the door. Showing the guards the seal of Venice, and informing them that they were there to see the Bishop, they were allowed inside. They were led into an opulen waiting room of red velvet drapes and panelled wood, dimly lit by lamplight.
After waiting for some time the majordomo of the house came to them offering refreshments, and then ushering in the zombie-like yet beautifull girls when they acepted. At last they were led before Bishop Alfonso, a tall dark haired man with hawkish features and dressed in robes remeniscent of those a Cardinal might wear. They formally introduced them selves and told him of their purpose, showing him the seal and letter of Narses.
He questioned about their deeds and intentions, before saying that there was a deed that they could do in the city for Narses.
A prominent Cainite among the Obertus named Gesu, a childe of the Dracon, needed to be removed. This he said, would make things smoother for both the Crusade and the City. Gesu was an obsticle, he said, and even more would die if he continued to live.
Wouls they do this deed for their liege he asked, they must discuss the matter they answered, and so with some iritation he bade them return to the waiting room, saying he wished for an answer before they left his house.
They returned to the antechamber and debated what course to take, Baradeus the most undecided of all, and resolving to enlist the aid of Vykos as he had spoken ill of Gesu to Baradeus in the past, they returned to Alfonso and agreed. He gave them the location of the Monastery of the Divinity Within, where Gesu and his ghouled monks could be found.
They left the Venetian Quater and devided their company, Mortius and Gregoire to go to Lady Alexia the Cappadocian, to whom all new arrivals in the city must report, and Volund, Maeduin, and Baradeus went to seek out Myca Vykos, if indeed he had returned there after Toth.
When Mortius and Gregoire arrived at the Mausoleum they went to the back entrance as instucted, and knocked but receaved no answer from any within the dark building. Knocking harder there door swung open slightly, and with their heightened senses they heard a wet growling sound from within.
Fearing that something may be amiss Gregoire, cloaked by Obfuscate, ventured into the darkness, seeing that the sounds enamated from a dark stairwell at the corner of the large room. Creeping as he went he approached the stairs, descending slowly and carefully. Upon reaching the bottom he saw a long subterranean chamber hewn from the stone and lined with a myriad of large stone sarcophagus's . At the near end was a tall pale skinned dark haired woman, staked through the heart and sprawled with an expression of fixed horror. At the far end was a finely dressed man with blood on his face, leaning over one of the sarcophagus's and seemingly draining the body that lay therin, frenzied, and unaware of the obfuscated Gregoire.
But as always, Gregoire was betrayed by himself, and stepped upn a loose flagstone alerting the diablerist to his prescance.
Looking up with a start, the man charged across the chamber, and stoped only when Gregoire aplied the arts of confusion to his mind. He then turned to the woman, and attempting to remove the stake, shouted for Mortius, who began to run toward the sound.
Over coming his befuddlement the frenzied Cainite resumed his charge toward Gregoire, and seizing him began to go for his throat.
Mortius reached the bottom of the spiral staircase and seeing what was happening thought fast and using all his strength, unstaked the female Cappadocian, who immediately grasped the frenzied Cainite and flung him so hard across the chamber that cracks apeared in the stone wall he impacted.
Then stooping over him she took out a dagger from the folds of her black dress and begad to inflict deep cuts upon him, spilling all his vitae on to the foor and sending him into Torpor.
Then turning toward Mortius and Gregoire, thanked them, and introduced herself as Lady Alexia of clan Cappadocian, and the man on the floor as Markus Musa Giovanni.
Meanwhile Baradeus led Volund and Maelduin to an abey where he dimly remembered that Vykos and Symeon may be found. After introducing themselves to the monk at the door they were given entry into the spascious knave of the building, all quiet save for the soft shuffling of feet or the low murmur of voices.
After a time the monk returned with Myca Vykos walking behind him, dressed in robes both fine and plain. He seemed pleased to see them, and after taking them aside answered their questions about Gesu, saying to Baradeus that the time had come for him to serve his city oncemore, though he seemed not to know they had already been employed for the very task. He told them of what had passed between Gesu and Symeon, his own sire. And of how Symeon both loved and hated his brother, but could not free himself from him. He told them of how Gesu refused to leave the city nor send the library of the forgotten away to safety as Symeon would do in his place. He would only meditate on the nature of his own Immaculate Union and his Divinity Within, and so they entirety of the Obertus were doomed to stay in Constantinople and suffer his fate.
When Vykos saw that Baradeus and his cohorts were ready to slay Gesu, he told them of an unused entranceway into his monastery that they may pass through unheeded, and told them to act swiftly, for time was now in short supply, both for them, and Constantinople itself...
