The year was 2259, the name of the place was Babylon 5. The Earth transport vessel requested permission to dock as three strangers looked out on the busy 5 mile long space station that was to be their last best hope for peace. A Minbari warrior caste "Kadrenn" returning to the station to seek recompense and redemption from his past, a human looking woman (and telepath) "Jill" fleeing her dark secret has found her way to B5 looking for escape, and a brakiri businessman "Nakir" set by his corporations CEO to meet with representatives of IPX on the station.

The transport docks with the thud and clang of docking claps and slowly with due process the passengers disembark to find the fortunes. Most pass uneventfully through the arrivals lounge, Kadreen however, is stopped a a detailed check of his id is made by the security officer in charge. He is allowed to continue only after a brief reminded to behave himself on the station by an inferior human officer. Nakri heads off to the Zocolo and red sector to find himself some quarters, whilst Jill logs onto BabCom and posts a job wanted advert before finding her own quarters. Meanwhile Kadrenn wanders blue sector looking for work himself. The sounds of a struggle reach his keen senses and he runs around the next corner to be faced with several thug like humans beating on a small Abbai female, with an obvious xenophobic motive. Kadrenn boldly demands the females release drawing the attention of the thugs to himself. A short while later the Abbai has fled and all the humans lie moaning or unconscious on the floor. Security are soon at the scene and Kadrenn not for the first time in his life see's the inside of a Bablyon 5 holding cell.

Elsewhere on the station Prof. Lawrence Vance is going about his day, having only recently returned from an IPX archaeological dig on one of the dead worlds created by the Dilgar war. Taking a message from Beta 9 on a secure BabCom channel his IPX contact informs him that the megacorp has sent one of their lawyers, a Mr Edwards, to Babylon 5 to recruit an expedition team for a trip out to the rim. The contact explains that the ship that has got the contract has been quite unsuccessful in recent expeditions and that his role apart from providing his own expertise is to watch and report on the operations and competency of the ship and crew. Lawrence is to meet this Mr Edwards this evening in the Zen Garden.
Nakir receives a similar message from his CEO explaining that he is to meet Mr Edwards in the Garden and that the IPX contracted expedition will cross brakiri space and that the syndicate want an independent observer to go along. Report any thing of interest that is discovered. Jill after only a few hours gets a reply to her work post on BabCom network. A Mr Edwards requesting he presence at the Zen Garden this evening. Kadrenn after only a few hours is released from the holding cell apparently on the direct request of the ambassador who has requested that he also attended a meeting in the Zen Garden this evening and take whatever job is offered. She seems to consider this a fitting punishment.

That evening four aliens and human(s) gather in the Zen Garden and shortly after a human dressed in a fine suit arrives carrying a chrome briefcase. He introduces himself as Mr Edwards and proceeds to greet each on the others in attendance. The group are told that they have been selected by IPX to take part in a rim expedition and that their contracts have already been signed. All that is left is for each of them to sign the contractual waivers. Mr Edwards is quite firm that the consequences for refusing to sign will be harsh hinting that IPX has done their homework on each of them. They have 48 hours to get things in order before they depart from shuttle bay 7.

After the meeting the group decide to get acquainted and the Professor treats them all to a meal at the Fresh Air Restaurant. Much treel was eaten and much bravari was drunk. Later after getting their business in order the group gathered in shuttle bay 7 where 2nd Lieutenant Jewkes and Science officer Drake waited to take them to the Horizon a Pathfinder class explorer ship under the command of Captain Shields. The shuttle promptly departs Bablyon 5 and the group find themselves on the bridge of the Horizon. After a brief introduction to the command crew they are taken to their quarters and the Horizon departs towards Earth space on its journey towards the rim.

END OF SESSION 1
After the first few jumps there is a short stop in the Gamma 7 system where two more crew are picked up, a new Narn security office J'Cruise (or GayCruise as it is written on the character sheet) and an unusual human dressed in Minbari robes, Julios Mortsen.
One evening all the new arrivals aboard the Horizon are invited to the captains table for a dinner prepared by the captains personal Drazi chef. The ship has no rotating sections so the meal takes place in zero gravity with the attendees strapped in around a magnetic table. Along with the four recruited from Babylon 5 there are several members of the crew at the captains tables including: Captain Shields himself, Commander Paine tactical and security officer, Science officer Drake, a Centuari doctor also recruited on B5. During the meal it becomes clear that moral aboard the ship is low and the captain unstable. Their past few missions have been a disaster and they own a huge debt to IPX for their past endeavours. Many of the original crew have jumped ship and those left are putting their last hopes on this trip out to the rim.
Several days pass and the Horizon continues to Hyach space from which they will jump out to the rim. The new arrivals integrate with the crew familiarising them selves with its systems and crew. Eventually an announcement is made that the ship is in position to begin finding a "Rim Ping". All crew take their stations and the search begins but much to the sensor operators frustration the captain refuses to follow any of the rim pings found making excuses about danger and wanting to be absolutely sure. After wasting many hours he is finally convinced to make a jump and the ship settles into several weeks in hyperspace travel.

The ship emerges from hyperspace into uncharted space, few stars light the sky this far out. A single planet in orbit of a binary star system flashes on the sensor readouts. The reading show a mineral rich planet with oceans of tar and a thin but breathable atmosphere with two moons and a ring of debris that could have been a third moon. The large amounts of quantium-40 get the crew very excited this being the break they had hoped for. The professor and 1st lieutenant Dodd continue sensor sweeps of the planet identifying only a single life form some kind of primitive fungus that covers a large potion of the land masses. They also spot some unusual formations on one of the sub continents but using only sensors it is difficult to make out what they are. The captain orders Nakir, Professor Vance, Kadrenn, Jill, J'Cruise and Julios to take a shuttle down to the surface and investigate the strange rock formations on the southern continent.

The expedition team gather their equipment and depart promptly on the shuttle taking a wide descent path to get a good view of the continent before they land. It is clear that the fungus covers the ground in large patches with bare rock corridors between them. The shuttle lands on a raised clear plateau and the expedition team disembark and split into two teams. After finding their way through the fungus to the rock formations. The area seems to be a large crater like formation and upon closer inspection orange fungus covered structures are still partially standing around the rim. The teams suddenly turn to find that the fungus behind them is slowly creeping and cutting off their route back to the shuttle. One team begins clearing a path to the shuttle using plasma fire which seems effective on the fungus, however Juilos gets some of the mold on his space suit and almost instantly it begins to eat away at it. Stripping the offending glove he manages to avoid any further damage. The others clear some of the ruins and retrieve the remains of a data storage unit. The shuttle is surrounded and has to take off as the fungus continues to creep. Using the thrusters another patch is cleared and the expedition team clambers back on board.
Back up on the Horizon samples are taken to the labs and the data storage unit is investigated, finding that the ruins are of a secret Hyach quantium-40 mining operation, the entires in the logs suggest that the fungus grew more aggressive the longer they remained on the planet which they had designated R-117. The captain anounces that they should return to known space with the samples and reports as soon as possible. The return trip is uneventful and after only two months the Horizon returns to Babylon 5. IPX is very pleased with the success of the mission and are very interested in using the fungus for further technological exploitation.
